I just finished my Finlayson sweater for Beau with some help from the sew-along! It is the softest, coolest, drapiest bamboo french terry imaginable. The weather is overcast for the first time in weeks, and my model is as willing as a cat on a harness (he loves the sweater, I swear), but I was so excited to be finished that I had to take some pictures right away!
The pattern was very clear, and I found the sew along really helpful. I learned so many things! Because my knit was so incredibly stretchy, it was tricky to find the right settings on our ancient and highly idiosyncratic machine. I found the needle type and size made a big difference. On sections with three layers, like the cuffs and collar, I had to change my stitch type or the needle skipped quite a bit. Did I mention this fabric was stretchy? Holy Dinah- was it ever stretchy.
The collar detail is really nice, and I think I even prefer it with the drape on him. In my thinner fabric, the cut is also less boxy than I was worried in might be. I did make a medium on top and small on the bottom, as suited his measurements.
The facing detail is a very tiny red check cotton with a reverse terry heart. It’s cheesy but I kind of love it. Beau usually cuts out his tags, so the terry facing was the softest thing I could think of.
I would like to make myself one with a hood in a thicker synthetic fabric for winter. I’ve really been into the idea of printed and novelty knits lately, and they do seem to make their way to the affordable section of the fabric store.
